How do I overcome compulsive eating?

I am 34 yrs old and have now hit the 16 stone weight on my scales. My ideal weight s around 10 stones.

I have tried every diet going, from weight watchers, slimming world to Rosemary conleys and even tips from my Gp. I have a large appetite, and even though I dont scoff chocolate or takeaways constantly, I think my portion sizes may be the problem. If I put less on my plate though, I often feel hungry afterwards. Any help out there or tips to reduce the amount I feel I need at each meal?
How do I overcome compulsive eating?
Well i often found that boredom was my main problem and i ate to pass the time, so i got out more and changed my diet too, i ate simple low fat meals like pasta in low fat sauces that i made from just tomatoes basil and garlic and onions, i cut out on bread and biscuits and ate loads of fruit and veg and i went from 15 stone down to 11 which is my ideal weight, also i cut out sugar filled drinks and cut down on the sugar in my tea, and now im at my ideal weight i can eat basically what i want as i now burn it off by keeping active.

Good Luck :-)

Reply:Hi you sound just like me, iv tried everything too, I'm 32 %26amp; 12 stone %26amp; i go from weight watchers to slimming world about 5 times a year, at the moment iv just started taking sida cordifolia chocolat banana tablets %26amp; it going great, iv lost 4 pound in 5 days which is a first for me, it says dont take more than 4 in 1 day %26amp; dont take after 3pm so iv been having 1 about 9am than another about 12 and i then take a third one about 3pm and i really dont fell hungry so my food intake has cut down, i got them from a sunbed shop and the were £10 for a tub of 30 which should last me about 9 days, it says on the tub gain energy %26amp; lose weight, so i would reccomend you try them as im made up with the results so far and what im thinking is if i take these for a few weeks and then stop my stomach should of shrunk and i should feel fuller without taking any more tablets so good luck from a fellow slimmer xxxxx.
Reply:Eat a small meal/snack (250 cals) every 2 hours or so. Have at least 15+ grams of protein at each of these little meals and very little carbs. Drink lots of water throughout the day (1 gallon minimum), as it will help you feels full. Pretty soon you'll feel fine, and if you do eat a large meal, you'll feel way to stuffed and realize that you've been eating way too much.

Edit: Adam L doesn't know what he's talking about. Everyone has a base metabolism which dictates the minimum amount of energy (calories) a person needs a day, even if they just ly on the sofa all day. Every adult needs at least 1000 cals/day. 1,000 cals would suffice a very petite woman.
Reply:drink a glass of water just before your meal - it'll help fill you
Reply:Speak to your doctor, make sure you are not suffering from Prader Willi syndrome or you may never be able to control your eating. This is a VERY rare condition but still worth checking out.

Reply:Exercise is very important too. If you consume even just 500 calories a day, but just lay about all day, you might only burn 100. So you're still putting on 400 calories (and the fat that goes with it) a day, even though you're eating right.

Even just a little bit of exercise, going for runs a couple times a week, or walking more places, can really make the difference.

I don't particularly agree with special diets that promise you can eat lots of tasty food, and still lose weight. Even if you weighed 25 stone, if you didn't eat for a month, you would without doubt be slimmer. (This is obviously very dangerous to your health, in no way should you do it - but it shows that if you burn more than you consume in a day, you will lose weight. you have to.)

Possibly recognise that eating is one of the greediet pleasures you can have. The bit of your brain that gets enjoyment out of food only lasts for a few minutes - which is why people after just eating fatty or snack foods say "i kinda want another one" - they're enjoying the pleasure the fats give them, but then it runs out quickly.

Maybe try little combinations of everything; running most days, eating moderately and in a healthy way.

Edit: (For Izzy S): After consulting my friend, doing a biology degree. Yes, everyone has a base metabolism rate, so eating less than what you need (calories-wise) is unhealthy for you, but you will lose weight because your metabolism is using more calories than you are taking in. Eating 1000 calories a day, whilst doing nothing, may keep you sustained...but at the size you currently are. And you don't want that, because you're fat.

To lose weight, you need to burn a lot more calories than you take in, and that means exercise. Hence eating less and exercising more.
Reply:the only thing i can suggest is chop up fruit keep in a tupperware dish and snack on that.....or bread sticks also try power walking
Reply:A lot depends on how determined you are to lose weight. If you tried every diet, did you stick to it long enough?

My suggestion is to cut down your portion slowly. Don't have too ambitious an aim. Break down your large goal to smaller steps to take every week. Change what you eat. Instead of red meats, replace with white meats. Instead of white meats, replace with more vegetables. Instead of sweet drinks, replace with water.

Weight (fats) is also a measure of toxins in your body. Have you tried a detox cleansing diet? One that focuses on removing toxic waste (fats including) from your body rather than on weight loss per se?

Reply:The problem with compulsive eating is not how much you eat but WHAT you eat.

You are probably eating the kind of food that gives your blood sugar levels a boost (chocolate, crisps, pasta, etc). This makes you feel great temporarily but soon you have cravings for more. There is significant danger of developing type 2 diabetes with this behaviour.

Try eating only low-density food instead. Density is the amount of calories divided by the weight. Examples of low-density food are fruit, most veg, lean meat, fish. Avoid cereals, nuts, pasta and sugary snacks.

Somebody else mentioned soup. An excellent idea, but avoid the runny soup. Chunky or thick soup is best because it fills you up for longer.

If you stick to the food I have just mentioned, you won't have to worry too much about how much you eat 'cos you'll feel full at each meal before consuming too many calories.

It's as simple as that.
Reply:Fill yourself up with veg, when I was dieting I used to buy the WW ready meals and then have it with loads of veg. Soup is also very good as it's easily digested, just don't have too much bread with it. Good luck
