What wine will go with this menu?

Starter: Salad with dressed-crab



Main: Roast Chicken with Rosemary



Dessert: Blueberry muffins



Would a white wine work? I usually like a good Riesling,

but I don't know anything about matching wines to food so I don't know how that would go.
What wine will go with this menu?
red wine for red meat and white wine for white meat.
Reply:Personally I would serve a White Zinfadel as it is my favourite or a Pinot Grigio
Reply:it sounds like you would like to serve the same wine with all 3 courses, in that case i recommend a gewuerztraminer, which will complement the whole meal, without breaking the bank; columbia crest makes a good one.
Reply:If its a crab salad with a vinegar based dressing , I'd go with a Marlborough New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - any of them shoudl be good and don't be put off by the specificity - readily available, and about $10-12 should do it - if cream based (or crab with butter type dressing) a Washington State Chardonnay - here, Columbia Crest Grand Estates(WS 88-90 ratings, for about $9.00 is a good bet). The chicken dish begs for a pinot noir, and Acacia for about $15 is a good choice - the dessert cries for a port - a bargain is Fonseca bin 27 (under $15) but if you want to go all out, go for Graham's or Warre's '77 - still available for under $100.



If you have to stick with one, go with the Grand Estates - it will cover all the bases.
Reply:Yes a good white will work and looking at the menu, I would go for the following.



Crab, with the richness of the crab, you would want something to cut through this and I would recommend either a Sauvignon Blanc or a Viognier. A surprise package would be a decent Soave - Pieropans (I think) is such a wine.



Chicken with Rosemary - push the envelope and go for a red. Either a Beuajolais or indeed a Pinot Noir would see you through. Beaujolias is made from Gamay grapes, and can be served with a slight chill to it. This will support the gravy/ Rosemary flavours. If you go for a white try a Saint Veran (£10) from Burgundy or indeed a Marsanne/ Roussane from the Rhone - Saint Peray is a good place to find such a varietal.



Finally Blueberry muffins. Try Brown Brothers Orange Muscat %26amp; Flora (dessert wine). When chilled this is a divine wine to slurp on. An alternative is Campbells of Rutheglen's Muscat. Get this into the freezer, and along with the ice cream you will be serving with the muffins, pour this over the dessert and luxuriate in how damned fine your life has suddenly become.

Reply:Do what I do. Pause thoughtfully in front of the wines stroking your chin. Then, without going for the cheapest one, pick the one that is under £4 and has the greatest price deduction. (After reading the label - which ideally will be in a foreign language - and nodding appreciatively.)

Is up to you what you drink and what with.

I actually like my red wine served chilled.

My dad is a wine connoisseur and has always told me you should enjoy wine your own way!!!

Reply:Hi Neil,i am a qualified chef with 25yrs experience so i know my onions as the saying goes.

Traditionally as your main course is chicken,which is in the class of a white meat then a white wine is more appropriate.

But also any chef will tell you experimenting is half the fun to an exceptional meal,and its presentation.

So with that in mind you can always break the rules and go for a red wine.

But if your trying for a more formal and traditional meal ,then you should stick to the white wine.

I believe that Australian wines have been popular this year,and can be bought for around the 5 pound+ in most supermarkets.
