I am already planting the usual herbs, chives, basil, oregano rosemary... Planning to try out some more variety for next summer, already got sweet cicely seeds. Are there any other good herbs to try out which are not found in every supermarket but might me good for herbal teas or cooking? Some old fashioned favorites? I only have a balcony, no real garden though. Suggestions?
Suggestions for good but uncommon kitchen herbs?
Try tagetes lucida. The common name is Mexican Tarragon, or Mexican Mint Marigold. It has a wonderful, mild licorice taste and smell; and can be used wherever you would use French or Russian tarragon. The only difference is that you can add Mexican Tarragon earlier in cooking, and it will keep it's flavor.
My plant grew to 12" tall, but it can grow to 2-3ft or more. Since it is a true marigold, it will eventually bloom if you are in a mild climate. I'm in zone 5, so I potted my plant before the freeze and brought it indoors. It still has that great scent every time I brush up against it.

Reply:Lemon balm,Mint,oregano,Basil,garlic and chamomile
Reply:try flavoured basil like Cinnamon basil or lemon basil or lemon thyme I also love spicy globe basil another nice one is dwarf dill all these herbs are easy to grow and don't require a lot of room
Reply:chamomile...great for a cup of relaxing tea. Cat-nip...grows like chamomile, break off a sprig for the cat, and watch the cat get stoned and go nutz while you enjoy that cup of relaxing tea. :-)
Reply:i like the different mints, lemon verbena, chervil, dill, chamomile, lavender, and i would also try the different lettuces like arugala. they grow wonderfully in smaller containers. my mom has an apartment with a little patio and she grows all sorts of lettuces for herself.
Reply:How about lemon grass? It is used to flavor lemon drops. I use it fresh to make the best lemon flavored tea, cooking, chopping the newest leaves finely with shrimp, chicken etc. fresh Cilantro leaves took some getting use to, but now I love it in soups, salsa's, flavoring meats. I have grown Jamaica, You use the flowers to make a naturally flavored, red drink. Just boil one minute, strain, add sugar.... I have grown all of them in a container just fine.
Reply:My garden would never be complete without Thyme.
Also might try sorrel, fennel, dill, mint, sage, lemon balm...
Reply:I love both Summer and Winter Savory and they grow well in containers. Salad Burnet is another unusual plant. It has pretty little leaves and tastes like cucumber. There are many thymes and sages, some with variegated leaves. Cilantro also grows well in containers but tends to bolt quickly. Successive plantings work best.

Bay ( for stew...can be kept an an indoor plant over winter)
Borage (good in salads)
