I am ready to create a small herbal patch in my gardern and....?

I need help in deciding how to plant the potted herbs that I will transplant to soil.

I have mint, rosemary, lavender, sage, oregano. I will create a circle with these herbs, which one should I plant in the outer edge?

I know mint expands everywhere wherever you plant it, so it is better to place it out or in the middle of my herbal circle?

Where do you live? Rosemary may not be hardy. Lavender and oregano are shorter, so could be on the outer edge. Rosemary, if hardy in your zone, will grow into a small woody shrub so go into the centre.



Mint is very spready, unless you want an all mint garden do not plant it directly into the soil. Instead, buy a 10" to 14" plastic pot with a rim. Fill it to within 2" of the top with potting soil and plant the mint in the pot. Dig a hole in your garden as wide as the pot and 2" shorter than the pot depth. Place the pot into the hole, leaving the pot rim sticking up about 2" above the ground level. This will contain the mint. You will need to divide the mint every spring.



If rosemary is not hardy in your zone, also place the rosemary in a pot. In the fall, dig up the rosemary in its pot and take it indoors for the winter.

Reply:I would put the oregano on the southern most edge of your "circle". Oregano does not grow very tall, and the other plants will cast it in shade.



Both the mint and the rosemary will spread like wild fire ~ if I could make a suggestion? what works quite well is to plant the pot directly in the ground which contains the roots for growth. If you don't want to bury your flower pots, you can use one of your chipped or cracked pots instead. I contain all my herbs in cracked pots which helps keep them from spreading around in the lawn.
Reply:As i live in Australia, our species of herbs are often different, but just check the height guides and plant the taller on the inside and the shorter creepier ones to the outside. If your like me my herbs dont get the chance to get over grown as i am always out there pinching bits from them!!
