Will mushrooms harm the herbs with which they're growing?

I live in a condo and, therefore, must grow everything in containers. I planted, as I always do, oregano, basil, parsley, rosemary, chives, as well as some small peppers. In the last few weeks, most of the containers have been invaded by mushroom growth.



1) Is this harmful to the herb?



2) More importantly, is it harmful to me if I ingest the herbs?



3) How can I get rid of this growth?



I love mushrooms, but I'm not about to eat these!





Any advice or knowledge is appreciated.

The mushrooms aren't harmful to the herbs. But, it is an indication that you may be overwatering the herbs. It won't hurt you to ingest the herbs, as long as you wash them properly before doing so.



To get rid of the mushrooms, pull them out. Then scrape off about an inch of the top of the soil and throw it out in the trash. Then replace the removed soil with new soil or mulch. If you don't remove this soil, remaining spores can continue to grow into new mushrooms.



And, whatever you do, don't eat them. Wash your hands well with hot water and soap after touching them, too. You never know how poisonous any given type of mushroom can be.
Reply:put a fine screen over the mushrooms so there spores cant spread through the air, the mold they produce on other food isnt served anywhere i eat, so id prolly not ingest any of it.
Reply:no but to help the herbs, spread some peanut butter and baking grease on them. It helpss them grow.
Reply:No harm. mushrooms are feeding off dead stuff (in the soil, probably). Just don't eat the 'shrooms!
