Did my Rosemary really die???

ok my grandma gave me a Rosemary plant for Christmas and she got it from home depot. so I had it on the dining room table and that was the only place where there was enough light and I had it there for about 2 or 3 weeks. After those weeks past I started to notice the Rosemary was turning to brown. and around Christmas time my brother put Christmas lights on my Rosemary so when I notice the Christmas lights were on my Rosemary I took them off and so I tried every other place I could think of to put my Rosemary in the light. I also tried watering it too and I don't think it's working. so when my Rosemary looked brown I sprinkled it with water it still had the good smell to it and it still does but the Rosemary is still like a brownish silver color.
Did my Rosemary really die???
Rosemary needs direct sun, and as much of it as it can get. "bright light" is not enough. A south-facing window, that is not blocked by awnings or evergreens. Then put it outside for the summer.

You didn't say how often your watered it - but overwatering is frequently a problem. If the soil was moist when you stuck your finger in - OR if the pot you were using had no drainage (i.e the pot was nested in the water-holding shiny pot wrap), my bet is that the roots drowned.
Reply:It will still smell of rosemary if it was dead because you just have dried rosemary leaves.Just like you can buy dried herbs, they still smell of herbs.

What you need to do to see if its still alive, is scrape a little bit of the brown bark with your fingernail, near the bottom of your rosemary. If you can see green underneath, then its still alive. Give the top of your plant a trim and stand it in a windowsill,as it needs lots of sunlight.Don't overwater it.Just when the compost becomes dry.I'd also pot it on into a larger pot with fresh compost. Can you put it outside somewhere? It will prefer being outside for the summer.

If its dead then you can use the brown dried leaves in cooking.

Good luck:-)
Reply:I think the butler did it in the study with the fireplace poker.
Reply:Rosemary is still alive and living down the road.
